Switching to prismatic cell formats?

LG Energy Solution plans to convert parts of its Ultium Cells production facilities in Tennessee and Ohio for the production of LFP cells. The plants went into operation in 2022 and 2024 respectively and have been producing pouch cells based on NCM ever since. However, LG and GM are reportedly looking into switching to prismatic cell formats, which are structurally better suited for LFP chemistry. Samsung SDI is reportedly evaluating similar measures in its $3.5 billion joint venture with GM in Indiana, which was originally intended exclusively for NCM cells. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027.

Five out of seven GM models with LFP in the future

With the realignment, GM is pursuing a segmentation of its vehicle portfolio: In the future, five out of seven GM electric vehicle models will be equipped with LFP batteries. Only the higher-priced models "GMC Hummer EV" and "Cadillac Lyriq" will continue to be operated with the more powerful NCM cells.
